Shopify Liquid is the templating language used to build Shopify themes. In this tutorial, I will teach you how to build fully customizable theme sections that merchants can edit from the Shopify admin.
What is a Liquid Section?
A section is a reusable piece of Liquid code that has a schema block at the bottom. The schema defines settings that appear in the Shopify theme editor, allowing merchants to customize content without touching code.
Basic Section Structure
Every section has three parts: the HTML/Liquid template at the top, optionally JavaScript and CSS in the middle, and the schema JSON at the bottom wrapped in schema tags.
Adding Schema Settings
Inside the schema, you define settings with types like text, image_picker, color, select, range, and richtext. Each setting has an id, label, and optional default value.
Using Section Blocks
Blocks let merchants add, remove, and reorder items inside a section — perfect for testimonials, features, team members, or FAQs. Define blocks in your schema with their own settings.
Pro Tips
Always use section.settings to reference values, add presets so sections appear in the Add Section menu, and test on mobile first since most Shopify traffic is mobile.
